Street Photography and Portraits

Rudy Sujanto

Born in Malang, a hilly town in East Java, Indonesia, over half a century ago. His father bought the family a camera, but was too busy to use it, leaving the teenage Rudy playing around with the contraption. He became the geek with the camera at school, taking pictures left and right. His friend thanked him for that much later, when school reunions necessitated the unearthing of old photos of their younger selves.

He learned a bit about art in college despite his language major, and even dabbled with the students’ photographic fraternity, but by the time he left for work, he was led astray by other hobbies and expediencies that made his interest in photography to become dormant. He started taking pictures again when digital cameras began to get affordable.

Since he never had any pretensions other than being a city dweller, he tried to capture the beauty in the mundane, daily urban scenes around him. Street photography was a natural path for that. He liked his shots to be awash in colors, although he fell for monochrome now and then, but it was people that cropped up in almost every shot he made. Although he shot mostly digital now, the film cameras he used during his school days were still in good working order, and he appreciated them for their lifelong companionship by taking them for photo hunts from time to time, plying the streets and alleys of Jakarta, Indonesia, where he now lived.
